French lop, a friendly giant!

The history of the breed

The breed French lop has been around for a long time, it probably came into being as early as the 1600-1700s. In writing, the breed is mentioned in a French book from 1845, The Garden of Plants of M Boitard . They were shown at an exhibition for the first time in 1863 in the Boulogne forest in Paris.

Character & temperament

French lops are usually curious and often have a good dose of humor, they are sociable and calm giants who in my opinion are excellent in families with children. It is important, as for all pets, that they as children are well socialized and managed to lay a good foundation for good cooperation with their new human family. Therefore, choose a Rabbit from a breeder who has put time and care into your new friend right from the start. It will play a big role in how the Rabbit thrives in a new environment and with life and movement.

Weight, appearance, colors & drawings

A French lop is a great friend, they normally weigh between 5-6 kg. Although they may also like to weigh more, as long as they are healthy and not overweight in relation to their size.

Characteristic of the breed, French lop has characteristically large drooping ears that probably arose from several mutations. According to The standard for the breed is to have a short and powerful head with a broad forehead, compact, broad and sturdy body shape. The coat is desired to be dense, long and as an adult in the coarser direction.

They are available in most colors and markings, although not all are approved for exhibition. Feel free to read more about at Rabbit genetics.

Life span

Large rabbits are usually not as old as dwarf rabbits, a French lops is usually around 4-6 years. Even if there are one or two happy individuals who stay for another year or two. Here, exercise, food and company play an important role.

Feeding

Our French lops eat hay that we buy from a farmer in big bales and pellets from the brand Rabbfor. In addition, they get the occasional treat, of course, such as banana, parsley, vegetables and fruit. What are suitable treats and in what quantity can they eat them? Have a look here.

There is a lot to keep in mind when it comes to feeding, Rabbits have a sensitive stomach and they need a high-fiber, low-fat diet. It is important that they always have access to good quality hay and fresh water.

Rabbits must eat more or less continuously so that the digestive system does not stop. That with devastating, sometimes life-threatening, consequences as a result. This is something that new rabbit owners are often not aware of, and which I therefore want to highlight a little extra. Read more here .
